Assange granted asylum, sort of?

The article: Assange and diplomatic asylum: a primer

The decision to grant asylum to controversial founder of whistleblower organization Wikileaks, Julian Assange was granted; however, he is still detained in the embassy. When we think of asylum said individual is granted asylum upon entering their safe haven yet in Assange's case he is not allowed to leave the embassy and enter South America.

Bottom line? The US has many enemies and has declared that transparency in its organizations is not desired nor a priority, and Assange particularly is a martyr to this cause, along with many other journalists and free-speech advocates.

  1. This was a very interesting article. I haven't followed the news about Assange (founder of WikiLeaks) and was surprised at the update in the article. It is a pretty tricky scenario: will England allow him to be transported to Ecuador for political asylum or will he remain in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London?

  2. I hadn't been following this story either. It was educational to study a bit about asylum and seems to follow what we have been learning about in class -- is international law more important than a nations laws, or are each nations laws more supreme.
